Facebook Page or Personal Profile: Which Is Best for Your Business?
Updated 3 weeks ago
To represent your brand, business, or venture on Facebook, use a Page (also called a fan page), not a personal profile. A profile represents a person: people who visit your “business” have to send you a friend request to see your updates, which makes the brand seem amateurish. Nobody wants to be friends with a brand or share their personal photos with it; people want to follow its news.
The advantages of a Page over a profile
Here are the main differences you’ll notice when managing your brand with a Page:
No limit on followers. A personal profile has a limit on the number of friends; a Page can collect unlimited likes.
Search engine presence. Pages are indexed by Google and Bing, so content you post on them can also appear in search results.
Anyone can tag the Page. On a profile, only your friends can tag you. With a Page, your fans can do so, and every tag is a link that helps more people discover you.
Insights. Pages include metrics on the reach of your posts, so you can see whether your message is reaching your audience.
Contests and giveaways. This feature isn’t available on a personal profile. Before you launch one, define your goal: do you want to promote a new product or get more likes?
Advertising. With a Page, you can create ads and promote your website—another tool that a personal profile doesn’t offer.
Work with a team without sharing passwords. On a Page, the admin can grant or revoke each person’s access in the settings, and each person manages it using their own Facebook account. To let someone manage your personal profile, on the other hand, they would need to use your password.
Check-ins at your location. If your business has a physical location (a bar, bookstore, or restaurant), your fans can check in to let others know they’re shopping at your place.
Pages you like. You can show your fans other Pages you follow, such as brands with an audience similar to yours or suppliers in your industry.
Presence in the feed. A Page you update regularly appears in your fans’ feeds, and when they interact with your posts, those interactions also reach their friends. This is the foundation for gaining new fans.
Comment as your brand. On Pages related to your business, you can comment as your brand instead of as your personal account. This increases your visibility and starts conversations with a new audience.
How to share Page management
Facebook’s official help documentation covers Page access: admins can grant, edit, or remove other Facebook accounts’ access in the Page settings. Each person signs in with their own account and sees the Page according to the access level you assigned, with no need to share any passwords.
Already have a profile? Should you convert it to a Page?
The practical option today is to create a new Page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/creation/ and grow it with its own followers. Facebook’s automatic profile-to-Page conversion tool, which its help documentation described in the past, is no longer available.
When you share your website on the Page
To make sure the links you share appear with the right title, description, and image, configure your website’s Open Graph tags. We explain how in Open Graph and social meta tags: how to control your link previews.
