Facebook Page or personal profile: which is better for your business
Updated 6 days ago
To represent your brand, business, or venture on Facebook, use a Page (also called a fan page), not a personal profile. A profile represents a person: anyone who visits your “business” has to send you a friend request to see updates, which gives the impression that the brand is amateurish. No one wants to be friends with a brand or share their personal photos with it; people want to follow its news.
The advantages of a Page over a profile
These are the main differences you’ll notice when managing your brand with a Page:
Unlimited followers. A personal profile has a limit on the number of friends; a Page can accumulate unlimited “likes.”
Search engine visibility. Pages are indexed by Google and Bing, so the content you post on them can also appear in search results.
Anyone can tag the Page. On a profile, only your friends can tag you. With a Page, your fans can do so, and each tag is a link through which more people can discover you.
Insights. Pages include metrics on the reach of your posts, allowing you to see whether your message is reaching your audience.
Contests and giveaways. This feature isn’t available on a personal profile. Before launching one, define your goal: do you want to promote a new product or increase your “likes”?
Advertising. With a Page, you can create ads and promote your site—another tool that a personal profile doesn’t offer.
A team without sharing passwords. On a Page, the administrator grants or revokes each person’s access from the settings, and each person manages it using their own Facebook account. To have someone manage your personal profile, on the other hand, they would have to use your password.
Check-in at your location. If your business has a physical location (a bar, bookstore, or restaurant), your fans can check in to let others know they’re shopping or dining at your establishment.
Pages you like. You can show your fans the other Pages you follow, such as brands with an audience compatible with yours or suppliers in your industry.
Presence in the feed. A Page that you update regularly appears in your fans’ news feeds, and when they interact with your posts, those interactions also reach their friends. This is the foundation for attracting new fans.
Comment as your brand. On Pages related to your business, you can comment as the brand instead of using your personal account, increasing your exposure and opening conversations with a new audience.
How to share Page management
Facebook’s official help documentation covers Page access: the administrator grants, edits, or removes other Facebook accounts’ access from the Page settings. Each person signs in with their own account and sees the Page according to the access level assigned to them, with no need to share any password.
You already have a profile—should you convert it into a Page?
The practical option today is to create a new Page from https://www.facebook.com/pages/creation/ and grow it with its own followers. The automatic profile-to-Page conversion tool previously described in Facebook’s help documentation is no longer available.
When you share your site on the Page
To ensure that the links you share appear with the correct title, description, and image, configure your site’s Open Graph tags: we explain how in Open Graph and social meta tags: how to control your link previews.
